TEAM DYNAMICS
Team dynamics research verifies five major factors that impact team
productivity and member satisfaction. These five major factors are:
1. The team’s mission, planning, and goal setting
2. Team organization
3. The operating processes of the team
4. The quality of interpersonal relationships
5. Relationships with other work groups
DIAGNOSTIC INTERVIEWING
Prior to beginning any efforts toward teambuilding for a work
unit, a diagnostic approach begins by intensively interviewing each
team member The interview takes approximately 1 hour and covers the
following areas:
a. Motivational factors
b. Frustrations
c. Old and recurring issues that block team effectiveness
d. Leadership issues
e. Roles and Responsibilities
f. Team structure
g. Applications of work rules
h. Mission support behaviors and practices
i. Conflict management/interpersonal relationship
j. Challenges facing the team
k. Relationships across departments
l. Problem solving and decision making practices
m. Other problems, issues, and concerns that may be contributing to
team functioning
PRESCRIPTIVES
Issues effecting team functioning are often deep-rooted and systemic
in nature and they cannot be addressed with a “quick fix”
or “cheap fix.” Time needs to be invested in uncovering
what those issues are that cause the team to be functioning at its
current level. These interviews are then analyzed for common themes
and trends. The actual objectives and content agenda are then developed
from the diagnostic interviews.
Prescriptive approaches are then defined based on the expectations
for the team’s performance. Mental models are redefined, team
pathologies are identified in a safe and supportive environment and
new teamwork skills are introduced. Participants will practice new
approaches based on CARING COMPETENCIES in order to focus on developing
more positive outcomes for the team. A follow-up plan is presented
with recommendations for continued improvement.
